Our 90th Anniversary production, running
12th–16th April 2011 at the Spa Centre,
is the Broadway smash hit Fiddler on the
Roof.
With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick,
and book by Joseph Stein, Fiddler on the
Roof features songs including Sunrise, Sunset;
Matchmaker; and the show-stopping If I Were A Rich Man.
Set in Tsarist Russia in 1905, the story centres on
Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to
maintain his family and religious traditions while
outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must
cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three
older daughters – each one’s choice of
husband moves further away from the customs of her faith
– and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the
Jews from their village.
The original Broadway production of the show, which
opened in 1964, was the first ever run of a musical to
surpass the 3,000 performance mark, and held the record
for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10
years until it was overtaken by Grease. It
remains the 14th longest-running show in Broadway
history. The production was nominated for ten Tony
Awards and won nine, including best musical, score,
book, direction and choreography. It spawned four
Broadway revivals and a successful 1971 film adaptation,
and the show has enjoyed enduring international
popularity.
This LWMS revival reunites the successful team behind
our acclaimed 2009 production, Seven Brides for
Seven Brothers: directer Judi Walton, musical
director Gary Lewis and choreographer Nikki Shurvinton.
Friday 16th and Saturday 17th September 2011
at the Town Hall, Royal Leamington Spa
The Anniversary Concert is only part of our 90th
Birthday celebrations. The full programme will be
published soon but, if you have been a member or
associated with Leamington and Warwick Musical
(Operatic) Society, please contact us. Why? Well, you
may wish to be part of the Concert but, as we are
organising a pictorial exhibition detailing the
Society’s history, we are keen to obtain
photographs, memorabilia or nostalgic anecdotes.
So, what have you got stored in your attic?
